Good announced its Good Dynamics program late last year, inviting select ISVs (independent software vendors) and developer companies to make their applications compatible with Good’s platform. The platform includes server software at an enterprise, Good’s network operations center and the application on the handset. Previously, the only apps available to users of Good’s platform were built by Good.
Good’s platform secures data at rest, encrypts data in transport to and from the device, and offers remote management tools to IT administrators. For example, an IT administrator can remotely kill the Box app if Read more text

RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook tablet
BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion’s (RIM) first entry into the fiercely competitive tablet market, the PlayBook, wasn’t exactly well-received by the masses when it was released last April. A variety of factors contributed to the lukewarm reaction, but the PlayBook’s lack of a dedicated e-mail client and native personal information management (PIM) apps, such as a calendar and contacts, were the focus of the negativity. The PlayBook also did not connect to corporate BlackBerry Enterprise Servers (BES), making it less than ideal for businesspeople.
Yesterday, RIM shored up some of these holes in its PlayBook software with the much-anticipated release of PlayBook OS 2.0. PlayBook users now have native e-mail and PIM, and the tablets can be connected to Microsoft Exchange servers Read more text

The growth rate of enterprise data is finally stabilizing, according to our 2012 InformationWeek State of Storage Survey. Finally, piling on disk capacity, upgrading storage area networks, and adding data-reduction technologies aren’t atop most respondents’ to-do lists. That doesn’t mean storage administrators are kicking back, though. Our respondents still worry about having the resources to support mission-critical applications and are more concerned than ever about keeping data safe and sound.

Storage pros are responding to these challenges with creative strategies, such as combining solid-state storage for high throughput needs; cloud services for backup, archiving, and disaster recovery; scale-out storage architectures for cost-effective, highly resilient capacity growth; and data encryption to protect information Read more text

Consumer file-sharing and synchronisation apps like Dropbox have become popular with business users, because they make it easy to sync files between computers, tablets and smartphones. However, many of these apps lack the security, centralised administration and management of enterprise solutions, causing headaches for IT departments.
DataLocker allows Dropbox users to encrypt their data, meaning that they can carry on using the service they know while still adhering to compliance regulations. The DataLocker suite, available via a free download, includes native clien Read more text

You may have noticed a capability called Wi-Fi Direct listed as a feature of some newer wireless networking products. Wi-Fi Direct allows Wi-Fi devices to communicate with each other in direct, peer-to-peer fashion instead of through a common wireless router or access point. This differs from the older ad hoc Wi-Fi technology shunned by many for usability issues and security concerns, and is designed to be better.
Products certified for Wi-Fi Direct by the Wi-Fi Alliance include select smartphones, digital televisions, and Blu-Ray players from certain manufacturers. Though the technology has been around for awhile, adoption seems quite low. That could be because it’s not well-known to the average consumer, not available in older Wi-Fi gear, or it could be that some people have a negative association with anything resembling ad hoc w Read more text

Access to enough IT staff with security expertise may be particularly tricky for organisations of all sizes. CompTIA says 41% of organisations reported moderate or significant deficiencies in security expertise among IT staff. A staff member at the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has lost an unencrypted USB drive containing a “stress test” for a UK nuclear power station.
The ONR, an agency of the Health and Safety Executive, admitted the loss of the data stick, which contained details on how to carry out safety assessments of a nuclear facility

The use of unencrypted USB pen drives is not permitted by ONR for transporting documents with a security classification.

The body said the USB “did not contain any significantly sensitive information.”
“At the start of the EC [European Council] ‘stress test’ programme, the licensees of all UK nuclear power stations committed to publishing their stress test reports, so most of the findings in this report are now in the public domain,” a spokesperson told IT Pro.
